Winter Tips
Trail Use and Winter Condition Reminder
Safety is your responsibility.
There are always hazards involved with outdoor recreational activities, especially during the winter. Be prepared for winter conditions in all areas. Even short trips can have serious consequences. Minimize your risk by planning ahead. Be prepared to adjust your activity based on current conditions. Parts of the trail are impassable during the winter months.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you are expected to return. Know the sunrise and sunset times. Expect winter hikes to take twice as long or longer depending on the snow conditions and you can only go as fast as the slowest person in your group.
- Set a turnaround time and stick to it.
- Check the weather conditions. It can snow several feet in a few hours or overnight.
- Carry emergency supplies.
- Wear the proper clothing and don’t get overheated.
- Bring a headlamp, hiking poles and safety gear. Snowshoes are recommended.
- Know where you are going. The trail and flagging may be obscured by snow. If you see tracks, they may not be following the trail. Don’t overestimate your abilities.
- Equipment failure and lack of reception are possible. Consider carrying a map and a compass as a backup.
- Carry a SpotX, Garmin inReach or Zeleo.
Be smart, be safe.
